Abstract The poor academic achievement of both male and female students in technical colleges in Nigeria has become worrisome to the researchers. It is believed that the use of the ef ective instructional methods in technical colleges would enhance students’ academic achievement. It is therefore important that teachers in technical colleges would adopt instructional methods that could improve the academic achievement of students in technical colleges. The study therefore, ascertained the ef ect of cognitive apprenticeship instructional method on male and female students’ academic achievement and retention of auto mechanics technology in technical colleges in Delta State. Two research questions guided the study, and two null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted the quasi-experimental research design. The pre-test post-test non-randomized control group experimental design was used. The population of the study comprised 237 vocational II auto mechanic students in the six technical colleges in Delta State. A sample of 114 was purposively selected for the study. Instrument for data collection was the Auto Mechanic Achievement Test (AMAT). The instrument was validated by three experts (two experts from the Department of Technology and Vocational Education and one expert from Measurement and Evaluation Unit of the Department of Educational Foundations), all in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka. The reliability coef icient of Auto Mechanics Achievement Test (AMAT) was established using Kunder Richardson 21 Formula, and the reliability coef icient of 0.75 was obtained. The arithmetic mean was used to analyze data relating to research questions, while analysis of covariance ANCOVA was used to test the null hypotheses. Abstract The study examined Vocational Skills Acquisition for Entrepreneurship Development and Technological Advancement in Industrial Technology Education as a Strategic Approach to surmount Economic Recession in Nigeria. The population of the study comprised one thousand nine hundred and four (1,904) in tertiary institutions offering TVET programmes in Rivers State. A total of 225 respondents (200 students and 25 lecturers) was the sample of the study selected through systematic sampling technique. One research question was posed and one hypothesis formulated for this study. A structured questionnaire validated and with reliability coefficient of 0.91 was the instrument used for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using statistical mean to answer the research question while t-test statistical tool was used to test the null hypothesis at 5% level of significance. The result revealed skill acquisition in industrial technology education involves the mastery of practical skills and knowledge in any vocational and technical field of study. It was therefore recommended among others that: government should set-up a joint curricula of entrepreneurial, technical vocational education and training to x-ray the possibilities of mismatching skills knowledge and initiatives or the acquisition of skills for self-reliant and job creation; Entrepreneurial centres in our institutions in Nigeria must be equipped and utilized to assist universities and other institutions to bridge the gap created by the theoretical nature of our entrepreneurial, technical vocational education and training programme in our institution.
