Abstract The mass mobility of schools graduates into menial jobs in the absence of government white-collar jobs in north central Nigeria has become a thing of major concern. Although this development is not completely unexpected in a country where government industries have been eroded through the annals of corruption and squander mania like Nigeria, what has become very surprising here is the fact that graduates of TVET institutions with their supposed acquisition of high level skills and man power development, also join the band wagon of roaming the streets in search of government jobs thereby perpetrating various forms of social vices instead of creating jobs for themselves and others in the society. In view of this development, it has become imperative to embark on a discussion like this in order to proffer solutions to this ugly development. The paper examined the role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the empowerment of the youths for the purpose of reducing youth unemployment and under-employment, and their attendant social vices in the society. The major focus of the paper include; the challenges of TVET as a centre-hub for propelling youth empowerment in North-Central Nigeria and the implications of TVET challenges to the small-scale metal working industries in North-Central Nigeria. The following were among the recommendations: government should review her current policy on TVET in order to key-in properly into the on-going world reform on preparing TVET educators for the next generation; TVET should be made compulsory for all the youths in Nigeria after secondary schools. This is to ensure that they acquire functional skills for self reliance in the society

Abstract The critical role played by Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in national
development has long been acknowledged in providing skilled workforce required for sustainable
industrial development in Nigeria. The level of skill possessed by TVET graduates, particularly,
Automobile Technology Graduates (ATGs) for employment, has been a worrisome issue for
employers of labour in automobile related industries in Nigeria. Despite the several formulated
policies geared towards reforming TVET to addressing skills gap challenges in the country, there are
yet indications of the prevalence of skills gap mostly in technical and occupational areas. In
particular, most ATGs often struggle to carry out technical tasks upon employment basically due to
the absence of adequate relevant skills. This is due to the grave deficiency of modern equipment,
facilities and competent personnel to equip students with the right skills set to enable them fit
properly into and adapt to the rapidly changing labour market demands in the 21st century
workplace. Consequent upon this, the current paper identified and expounded on skills gap and
elucidated on its precursor factors. Additionally, this paper critically observed and elicited
innovative TVET policies and practices that can actually bridge the skills gap among ATGs in
Nigeria, some of which are assembling political will to facilitate vocationalization; compulsory twoyears Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES); need for Public-Private Partnership
(PPP) among others. Some recommendations that were proffered include among others, the
government of the day should look more closely into TVET to ensure existing TVET related polices
are implemented through the stipulated bodies; industries, government and TVET institutions should
establish robust and dynamic partnership that will enhance and deepen the skills of automobile
technology students through a thoroughly monitored two-years compulsory SIWES in relevant
industries to strengthen employment prospects upon graduation; and review and reformation of
TVET curriculum should be carried out by the various key players to adequately reflect all inclusiveness.

Abstract This study determined the effects of social media on students’ achievement in learning
automobile lighting system in technical colleges in Niger State. Two research questions and
two null hypotheses tested at (P< .05) level of significance guided the study. A quasiexperimental design was adopted for the study. The population for the study was 203 TC II
Motor Vehicle Mechanic (MVM) students; this consists of 197 boys and 6 girls. Two intact
class made up of 64 TC II students in GTC Minna were assigned to conventional teaching
method and 139 TC II students in Sulaiman Barau Technical College (SBTC) Suleja were
assigned to the Social Media Instruction (SMI) technique. The instrument used for data
collection was the Automobile Lighting System Achievement Test (ALSAT). ALSAT was
subjected to face and content validation by three experts in MVM. The study found out that the
students taught with conventional lecture method had significantly higher mean achievement
score than students taught automobile lighting system with SMI. Despite the fact that the
students performed better in the use of conventional lecture method, however, the use of SMI
appreciably increased the performance of the students based on gender. It was, therefore,
recommended among others that, automobile teachers should be taught the application and
usage of various modern teaching techniques such as Social Media Instruction (SMI) for
effective teaching and learning of automobile lighting system and other technical vocational
courses in technical colleges.
